My experience with the SPCA

Yesterday, I tried to help a friend. She had inherited a cat from a deceased relative but, the cat was just completely unsocial. I offered to take the cat to the SPCA, because she just  could not bear the thought of euthanizing the poor thing. I could not take the cat because I already have 2 (through similar circumstances) and cannot afford to take on another.

So we put the cat in the carrier, I drove 20 miles to the SPCA and when I got there, guess what? They refused to take the animal! I explained the circumstances to them and they refused to accept the animal. They said they were not accepting cats at this time. So I asked what am I supposed to do with the cat? They didn't care, they said they were not taking it. I was furious!

I drove back home and brought him in my apartment - btw he pooped along the way ewwwwwwwwwwww! I set the carrier down in the middle of the room with the cat inside. And let my cats check him out. They went nuts! They hissed and spit , then ran and hid. So I knew this was not going to work. I put the cat in the bathroom with food, water, and litter - so he could get out of the carrier and I could clean it. The poor thing had been in there for 3 hours!

Then I went online and checked out a few other non-profits in my area.

Second chance - phone rang off the wall - no answer/ no machine

10 lives - in order to surrender a cat- you must be willing to pay ALL expenses associated with the care of the animal until it is adopted.

HEART - "HEART IS A RESCUE ORGANIZATION, WE DO NOT RE-HOME PERSONAL PETS"

So what is a person to do? This cat has no where to go. I have posted on Craig's list as well as free cycle. no response as of yet, nor do I expect one. Ultimately, the owner will take the cat to be euthanized at the vet.

My question is: these organizations are always begging for money, yet when I went to them for help, I was denied.

Where the hell is all the money going?

Too many times I read posts from people denied assistance from charitable organizations, yet they ( the organizations ) have no problem begging for money from us. I do not donate to organizations as it is, but if ever in the position to, I will deny their request and donate directly to the people who need it.

WOW! thank you all! I am so surprised that I am not the only one who feels this way. I get so angry thinking that I am helping and end up only doing nothing because the supposed solutions are the problem. There has to be a better way.

I know there is no perfect solution, but something has to be better than this. The question is, WHAT? We  have all seen (from history) what happens when the government gets involved ( communism, socialism, dictatorships, cults) I know there is no utopian society, but there has to be a middle ground that keeps the economy going with out leaving people behind in utter poverty.

What you say is so  true , vistahelp . Of the MAJORITY of charitable organizations . It is disgusting , and part of the whole mess of why people ( and animals ) can't get treated in the humane and dignified way that all creatures on this earth should be treated.

I still say "If you aren't part of the solution , you are part of the problem." An old quote that I learned in the '70s for the ecological movement. It still applies to so many things.

This is why I like the concept of Aidpages : "People Helping People" , because it starts with me.If I am spending too much time telling other people to get going to make a change , then I am wasting energy in doing something myself.

Charity Navigator is a great way to see where the money is going ! It has easy to read pie charts that graphically show the amount of distribution. You can find the 'bad' charities , AND the 'good ' ones using this site.

Thank you Elaine of TSA !

Just one more thing , there is a growing network of people who want to and do try to make a change (in addition to Aidpages). Some are listed here : http://www.netsquared.org/2007/partner/advocates

In an ideal world we would all love & help thy neighbor (directly).  Till then, charitable organizations are needed and do serve purposes even though much of what you and vistahelp have said can be true of many organizations.

I would suggest anyone choosing to donate to Charity check http://www.charitynavigator.org  and or http://www.networkforgood.org and check their percentage of funds raised vs used for direct services.  Also donate direct to the charity rather than supporting their fund raising agency.

MHO,

Elaine

"Where the hell is all the money going? "  ... Most likely.. to fundraising parties, fat salaries, friends of their friends telemarketers to ask us for more money (charitables are excluded from "do not call list"), and gooood tax advisors and accountants...and of course what is left goes to a narrow well defined but a noble cause - in most cases where friends are involved.
